TODAY WE’RE TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT THE FOUNDATION OF THE COMPOSITE WORLD – THE HAND LAY-UP METHOD
It’s the oldest and most versatile technique – perfect for understanding the entire process.
5 KEY STEPS THAT TURN RESIN AND FIBERS INTO A LAMINATE:
1. PREPARING THE MOLD (MATRIX)
The mold is thoroughly cleaned and coated with a release agent. This ensures that the finished laminate separates smoothly from the mold.
2. APPLYING THE RESIN
A layer of gelcoat (the aesthetic surface) is applied onto the mold.
3. LAYING THE REINFORCEMENT (FIBERS)
Mats or fabrics made of glass or carbon fibers are manually laid and impregnated with resin that has been mixed with the appropriate hardener.
4. ROLLING – AIR REMOVAL
The operator uses a special roller to remove air bubbles and ensure perfect adhesion of the reinforcement. This step determines the final strength!
5. CURING (POLYMERIZATION)
The laminate is left to cure (polymerize). This process can take from several hours to several days, depending on the resin type and ambient temperature.
